Disrupting the Status Quo

Final project for third year fashion studio - working through the framework of “Wellbeing and everyday”. I chose to focus on how the clothing we wear helps us express our personalities and can be a creative outlet. Feeling confident and comfortable in yourself and your clothing can deeply improve your wellbeing. I wanted to provide an alternative clothing option than what is currently available in fast fashion stores in New Zealand. Currently, most fast fashion brands in New Zealand sell similar styles of tight fitting and cropped clothing in block colours. To go against these trends, my aim for this project was to disrupt the status quo by challenging proportions and clashing prints. I designed a conceptual ready-to-wear collection inspired by street style and past subcultures, both of which go against the mainstream fashion trends. The proportions of the garments are very exaggerated, some to point of being problematic. The long arms and pant legs can be adjusted with straps and buckles, allowing the wearer to customize the drape and fit of the garments. I constructed 2 bodies from this collection using a mixture of flat patternmaking and draping techniques.
